WHAT WE DO
A deeper look into what makes us unique...

BELOVED San Diego is a progressive, contemplative Christian faith community where all people are beloved children of God. You are invited to be a part of our movement of "extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion" through workshops and events to enrich your faith and spiritual practice; facilitate the Compassion Practice in your daily life; and develop Compassionary congregations, businesses, and organizations. We recognize the need to honor the realities of mental health and faith, undo harmful teachings, and heal the hurt caused by other churches.

Below you will find our upcoming events — all hosted online via Zoom videoconferencing.

Reverend Dale Suggs will lead a special worship celebrating BELOVED San Diego's ministry to the community.

Coffee and Community – We enjoy a casual start with coffee and conversation learning new names and catching up on life.  We also greet anyone joining through Zoom.

Meditation and Prayer We engage in a variety of spiritual practices to re-center and find grounding each week.   Modern practices of mindfulness as well as ancient practices of the Christian mystics are regularly explored.   We always spend quality time sharing personal prayers for healing of ourselves, our families, and our world.

Interactive Exploration of Scripture We dive deep into a scripture through contemplative reading, critical thinking and open-minded discussion facilitated by the theological expertise of our talented pastors.  Rather than passively listening to a sermon or lecture, everyone is invited to share questions and bring personal experience to the conversation.  Many are unlearning old, harmful teachings finding new ways to relate to their own faith tradition.  Whether listening or speaking, all are free to participate in whatever way feels right.

Communion We celebrate the Lord's Supper at an open table where all are welcome to participate.  Families choose how their children will experience this ancient Christian spiritual practice.

Children’s Worship and Wonder
Worship and Wonder invites children (age 3 to grade 3) to experience Bible Stories in mindful, hands-on ways. Following the model of Sonja Stewart's "Young Children in Worship," the stories of the sacred texts are brought to life with natural materials of wood and felt. Trained storytellers offer the words of the stories and gently wonder aloud with the children allowing questions and curiosity to grow. A variety of child-friendly materials provide opportunity to extend critical thinking and mindfulness practice.

Offerings We gratefully receive free will gifts in any amount by way of check or cash.  Many of us prefer the easy-to-use electronic options also available. (Venmo or Text to Give).

Join our compassion practice group as we connect online during these “stay-at-home orders” for a time of grounding, guided meditation, personal reflection and group sharing. During this time of physical separation to keep each other healthy, we need to also stay connected to keep ourselves and each other healthy! We practice open-hearted sharing and nonjudgmental, compassionate listening based on The Compassion Practice developed by Frank Rogers, Jr. Incorporating mindful attention to our internal experience, the Compassion Practice nurturers authentic compassion for others--starting with ourselves. Trained CP facilitators invite inter-religious group sharing free from cross-talk, judgment, criticism or correction. All are welcome to join the contemplative learning experience.

Beloved Saturdays

We often hold casual forums to engage in authentic conversations with experts on topics of faith and justice. Easy, relaxed discussion over coffee invites spiritual growth for both the religious and non-religious spiritual practitioners. Open-hearted Q&A allows for deeper experience with featured speakers from varied faith backgrounds and justice movements. Children’s programming engages imagination, mindfulness and wonder with bible stories for age 3 -grade 3.
